Southern Caramel Cake: A Classic Heirloom Recipe

  1. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  2. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cakes are golden brown, the centers spring back when lightly touched, and the edges pull away from the pans.
  3. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pans for 5 minutes. Then, turn the cakes out onto wire racks to cool completely.

3. Make the Caramel Icing

  1. Prepare a double batch of Southern Caramel Icing (recipe linked or included below).
  2. Allow the icing to cool slightly until it reaches a spreadable consistency.

4. Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of caramel icing on top.
  2. Add the second layer and repeat. Top with the third layer and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining icing.
  3. Let the cake set for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
